Every year in August, the top secondary school debaters from around New Zealand gather in Wellington for the National Finals of the Russell McVeagh New Zealand Schools’ Debating Championships. There are five rounds of impromptu debates, with the top four teams then progressing to the semi-finals. The Grand Final is traditionally held in the Legislative Council Chamber of Parliament in front of the Hon. Peter Dunne, MP, and His Excellency the Governor-General, Patron of the New Zealand Schools’ Debating Council.
