Every year in August, the top secondary school debaters from around New Zealand gather in Wellington for the National Finals of the Russell McVeagh New Zealand Schools’ Debating Championships. There are five rounds of debating: two prepared and three impromptu. The top four teams then progress to the semi-finals, the winners of which meet in the Grand Final, held in the Legislative Council Chamber of Parliament in front of The Hon. Peter Dunne, MP, and His Excellency the Governor-General, Patron of the New Zealand Schools’ Debating Council.
