NZ Team
At the National Finals of the New Zealand Schools’ Debating Championships the five best debaters are selected as the New Zealand Schools’ Debating Team. The New Zealand Team then travel to the World Schools’ Debating Championships which are usually held in February of each year.
The 2008 Russell McVeagh New Zealand Schools’ Debating Team were the winners of the 2009 World Schools Debating Championships held in Athens, Greece in February 2009, the first time NZ has won Worlds since 1995. The same team were also runners-up at the 2008 World Champs in Washington D.C.
At the 2009 World Champs, Maria English was named as the world’s second best speaker. At the 2008 tournament, Jennifer Savage won the award for best speaker (with Ben Kornfeld 2nd, and Holly Jenkins 3rd equal).
